Our homemade media produces excellent hydei and melanogaster cultures. It smells heavily of oatmeal and cinnamon for the duration of 30 day cultures. I could not stand smelling repashy and other large retailers media when I was mixing it let alone after maggots started churning it which led us to our media consisting of oatmeal, fruits, veggies, and supplements. We feel the extra carotenoid content in the fly media even shows in the flies themselves by looking at their eyes after the first boom!
We use 1/3 cup media to 1/2 cup boiling water for each culture for best results – the amount of water may vary slightly depending on your conditions. We aim for a peanut butter consistency.
Ingredients : Oatmeal, potato flakes, brewers yeast, organic cinnamon, repashy superpig, organic carrot powder, organic coconut powder, organic beet root, organic banana powder, and methyl paraben for added mold protection.
