Tree Frog Care
Always Gutload any insects before feeding – What they have in thier bellies helps give essential nutrients to your new pal.
Babies and Juvenile Tree Frogs: Pinhead to 1/8″ crickets, termites, Melanogaster and Hydei Fruit Flies dusted every 2-3 days. You should feed enough that they are all gone by day 3.
Adults Tree Frogs: Crickets, Dubia Roaches (Sm), silk worms, small earthworms, grasshoppers, dusted every 2-3 days. You should feed enough that they are all gone by day 3.
We recommend using Calcium with vitamin D. There are several reputable brands available on our site but we suggest sticking to the following schedules:
- Calcium Plus (Calcium with Vitamin – D) every feeding (2-3 days)
- Vitamin A – 2 times per month, do not overuse or it may cause health issues
- Cartenoids – Other vitamins and minerals mainly aimed at assisting with color of your animals, but there are other health benefits since food is not as diverse as it might be in the wild.
We use a rotation of multiple brands to ensure we are giving a good mixture of all essentials. Brands we suggest include:
Repashy, Tincman Herps, Ranarium, and Reptical/herpivite combo.

The bigger the better!
Well sometimes when you have babies you will want a small enclosure to keep a good eye on them and ensure they are eating, but the general rule for frogs is the bigger the better. The normal territory for a tree frog is a hundred feet vertical and several meters around, so you can likely never have a big enough tank.
With that being said, tree frogs are mostly arboreal so you want to consider going vertical more than horizontal. Our InSitu Ecosystems Alto Vivarium is a fantastic choice. If you have a 10 or 20 gallon tank you can look into vertical conversion kits, for one to two tree frogs. If you plan on more, think one frog per 5 gallon tank. Tree frogs are generally ok in groups, but you should keep only the same type and verify the species you are working with is not aggressive.
We recommend going bioactive if you are willing to fill up the tank with plants, wood, a little leaf litter, springtails and isopods, and a some ABG substrate, it will go a long way to keeping your frogs happy.
Tree Frogs are nocturnal so they only require moderate light, and we usually stick to a 12/12 hour light cycle to mimic the tropics. We like to add enough light to keep the plants happy but enough shady hiding spots for the frogs.
We recommend Thrive Ecosystems LED light. Although not required, it is also recommended that you utilize a UVB light in your vivarium set-up.
Tree Frogs in general like humidity above 50% but below 80%. This can usually be acheived by using either a partially covered glass top, or a fully closed tank with exhaust fans and internal circulation fans. A misting system can help automating the twice daily misting that we recommend. The tank should partially dry out between misting, but should always remain above 50%
Tree Frogs enjoy room temperature. No need for heaters, in fact you should try to keep it below 85 at all times. 65 should be a low point, anything below 65 or above 85 may be harmful.
InSitu Ecosystems Alto vivariums are a complete solution for your tree frog friends!
